Thirdly, forgiveness provides the courage to speak about our wounds. Giving voice to the reality of our experience honors the part of us that was so deeply offended. From this place of honor we are now able to acknowledge any pain we might have inflicted on another. In that holy interchange, shame loses its power to keep us prisoner in the fortress of our own guilt.
Fourthly, the door to freedom opens and we can walk through it because we are willing to let go of the situation that held us in bondage. As we begin to experience life from this new perspective we understand the gift of forgiveness. It gives us the freedom to love.
